5 Simple Secrets to Finally Write Your Book
Maybe you do not want to write a book. But statistics show that 82 percent of people say they either want to write a book or strongly feel they have a book inside them.
Picture walking into a room with nine other people. Only two of you have no desire to write a book. The desire to create and share a story is nearly universal.
My goal is not to convince you that you must write a book. My goal is to convince you that if you want to, you can. You can write it, finish it, and publish it.
How do I know? Because I have been where you may be right now. Nine years ago, I put the word author on my website. Friends told me I should not do that because I had never published a book. They were right. I had written articles, scripts, and a few unfinished manuscripts, but nothing in print. Still, I discovered something important. I was already writing. I was an author who had not yet bloomed.
Nine years later, with seven published titles, I can tell you with confidence: if I can do it, then you can too.
What if you think you do not have time?
Most people who want to write a book never start because they believe they need the perfect moment. More time. More energy. A quieter life. A fresh calendar. But almost no writer begins with ideal conditions.
Some complete books in small pockets of time. Hundreds of words squeezed in before work or after the house is quiet.
Mary Higgins Clark wrote her first pages at her kitchen table in the early morning hours before her children woke up. One page a day turned into a manuscript. The manuscript became her career. She did not wait for perfect conditions. She created progress in small, steady steps.
If the story is in you, time is not the problem. The first step is deciding to begin.
With that foundation in place, here are five secrets that will help you write and publish your book.
Secret 1: Believe you can
Most people never start because they convince themselves they cannot. If you believe you can write a book, the work becomes lighter. If you believe you cannot, you may never finish the first chapter. Belief matters. It drives action.
Secret 2: You do not have to publish everything you write
Every writer has unfinished work. Every writer has weak drafts. That is part of the process. The important thing is to keep writing. Keep putting words onto the page. Some books teach you how to write the ones that come after them.
Secret 3: Start in the middle
There is a Latin phrase, in medias res. It means in the middle of things. Begin with action, discovery, conflict, or tension. Elmore Leonard advised writers to cut out the parts readers skip. Start where something is happening. Pull the reader in immediately.
When I wrote my thriller, The Making of Mann, the opening line was:
“You know I do not work foreclosures, Randy, and you know why. Find someone else”, I said louder than necessary into my headset.
No long backstory. No warm-up. Straight into the story.
In nonfiction, I opened The Millionaire Maker with a single sentence from the pottery shop where my real estate journey began. One moment, one visual, and the reader is already inside the story.
Secret 4: You do not need an agent or a publishing contract
Unless you already have a massive following, traditional publishers are difficult to secure. Even when you get one, most authors still have to handle their own marketing. Publishing houses become interested after an author has already built an audience.
The book The Shack began as a personal project printed out of a garage. After the author sold a million copies by word of mouth, publishers appeared. Success comes from doing the work, not waiting for permission.
Hybrid publishing also requires caution. It can be expensive, royalties can be small, and creative control is limited. Read every contract closely.
Secret 5: You can start your own publishing company
Publishing has changed. You can form your own imprint. You can publish print editions, e-books, and audiobooks. You retain full control of your work and your rights.
Five of the seven of my published titles were produced this way. The royalties arrive every month. They are not lottery winnings, but they are consistent. More importantly, the books exist because I chose not to wait.
So ask yourself a simple question. Do you still doubt that you can write a book? Do you doubt that you can publish it?
